Travelling to Chamonix

Air Travel

Geneva
is ths closest airport, just one hour on a fast easy road. To use the Swiss motorway and drive arounfd Geneva, a Vignette is required. It is slower to drive through the city to access the French auto-route. French auto-route tolls total 30Ff each way.

Chambery Airport near Aix Les Bains is about 1:30 hours with winter season weekend UK return flights

Lyon is further south than Chambery. Allow 2hrs 45 mins transfer time.

easyJet now have flights out of Luton, Liverpool, Stanstead and Gatwick to Geneva. Prices start at £40 return. EasyJet's policy is to progressively load their prices as the flights fill up so the earlier you book, the better your chance of a low fare.
British Airways and CrossAir have numerous flights to Geneva and it's worth checking their web sites for last minute online deals.


By Car

Driving to Chamonix from Geneva Airport

· On leaving the airport join the main road, Route De Pré-Bois .

· Follow the green motorway signs to France along a straight road for about 1km.

· Move into in the centre right lane on arriving at a T-junction with traffic lights.

· At the T-junction turn left onto the Route de Vernier .

· Immediately move into the right lane (bus lane).

· Drive 150m then take the slip road onto the motorway sign-posted France .

· The E62-A1-E25 motorway takes you to the border (Bardonnex) with France.

· Once in France follow the signs for Chamonix Mont-Blanc .

· You will require a total of €4.70 for the two péage points (toll charges) for a normal family car. All major credit cards are accepted 24/7
· Remember that the French motorway signs are blue whereas the Swiss ones are green.
· Geneva airport to Chamonix via this route is about 100km.

From the UK
There is direct Autoroute access to Chamonix. It's about 550 miles from Calais and the average drive time is 8-9 hours. Autoroute tolls are approximately EUR105 return.

Train to Chamonix

Travelling to Chamonix from the UK by train is not a good option. If using public transport, air travel will nearly always be quicker and less expensive.

There are several routes
1. Eurostar from London Waterloo to Paris (Nord). Cross Paris to Gare du Lyon and travel by SNCF via Annecy & Saint Gervais Les Bains to Chamonix.

2. Eurostar from London Waterloo to Lille. SNCF from Lille (Flanders) to Chamonix, via Lyon (Part Dieu) & Saint Gervais Les Bain in about 8hrs30

3. Eurostar from London Waterloo to Paris (Nord).
Cross Paris to Paris Austerlitz. This SNCF route allows for a overnight travel with a sleeping car and arrival in Chamonix at about 10.30am.

4. Eurostar from London Waterloo to Paris (Nord). Cross Paris to Gare du Lyon and travel by SNCF on a TGV in 3 hours to BELLEGARDE SUR VALSERIVE about 1hr 20 from Chamonix by road.

5. Eurostar from London Waterloo to Paris (Nord). Cross Paris to Gare du Lyon and travel by SNCF on a TGV in 4 hours to Geneva Airport and take a Transfer to Chamonix
